Police detectives in Ondo State have arrested a suspected kidnapper, Godspower Cletus, after he allegedly tried to withdraw part of a ransom paid through his victim’s bank account.
The suspect was caught at a POS point in Akure while attempting to withdraw N1 million, according to the state police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka.
The incident began when Cletus reportedly stormed the home of Mrs Farimoyo Endurance in Odudu community, Akure. He was said to have been armed with a gun during the attack.
A police source told reporters that the suspect forced the woman to hand over her Android phone and ATM card. The source added that he then threatened her and forced her to call her husband to demand a ransom of N5 million.
The source said, “The husband transferred N1 million to the victim’s Opay account. Upon confirming the payment, the suspect fled the scene, believing he had succeeded.”
Police detectives from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad later used intelligence tracking to locate him.
Confirming the arrest, Olayinka said, “Upon interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime, and investigations are ongoing to determine if he has accomplices or links to similar criminal activities within the state.”
He praised the officers involved, saying, “The swift and professional response of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad reflects the Command’s strengthened operational capability and commitment to proactive crime prevention.”
The police said further findings would guide the next steps in the case.
