A Magistrate Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a farm worker, John Odah, for allegedly killing his employer’s husband with a machete.
The incident reportedly happened on April 18, 2025, at Agbajo farm, located in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area.
Police said the suspect had a heated argument with the victim, Sunday Innocent, after offering him Indian hemp, which the deceased refused. During the quarrel, Odah allegedly used a machete to cut the victim on the forehead and back, which led to his death.
The suspect was arrested by the Ondo State Police Command and brought before the court on a charge of murder.
During the court session, the prosecutor, Inspector Nelson Akintimehin, told the court that the offence took place around 2pm on the farm.
“That you, John Odah, on April 18, 2025, at about 2:00 pm, Agbajo farm via Ilu-Abo, in the Akure Magisterial District, did unlawfully machete one Sunday Innocent with a cutlass on his forehead and back which resulted in his death,” the charge sheet stated.
The prosecutor said the crime goes against Sections 319(1) and 320(1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
Although the defendant was in court, his plea was not taken. The prosecutor asked the court to remand him in a correctional centre while awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Magistrate O. Omotosho granted the request and ordered that Odah be remanded in prison. She also directed the prosecutor to send the case file to the DPP.
The case was adjourned to May 30, 2025, for mention.
