Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has declared his bid to run for president on the platform of the Labour party in 2019.
Mimiko made the declaration at exactly 12:15 pm, at an event held at the National Secretariat of the Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam-led LP, in Abuja, on Thursday.
He said there comes a time in the life of a nation where all patriots must stand up to be counted.
“I have found it compelling to declare my intention to run for president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
Mimiko lamented the wanton killings across the country especially in the Middle Belt saying purposeful leadership was required to halt the carnage.

A close ally of the former governor said Mimiko’s decision to throw his hat into the presidential ring was based on wide consultation with his political supporters across the country.
“Yes, it is true. Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, immediate former Governor of Ondo State has joined the league of presidential aspirants that would slug it out in 2019 general election,” he said.
“He is currently in Abuja as I talk to you and will be racing under the banner of the Labour Party (LP); many of his supporters are already with him at the national secretariat. The last time we spoke on phone, he (Mimiko) said he decided to throw his hat into the ring, having examined the state of this nation on bad economy, insecurity and lack of purposeful leadership in the nation and he is there to make a difference.”
He further explained that the former Ondo State Governor would begin a tour for campaign anytime soon.

In June, Mimiko resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In his letter of resignation that he then addressed to the party in the state, he noted that his reasons for resigning were “personal” and “well thought-out.”
Later, the immediate former Ondo Governor announced his return to the Labour Party (LP).
