The Ondo State Government has set up a new security unit called Amotekun Rangers to tackle the rising cases of killings and kidnappings of farmers in border communities and forests across the state.

The Commander of the Ondo State Amotekun Corps, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, announced this on Tuesday in Akure while parading nine suspected criminals.

Adeleye shared that the training of the Amotekun Forest Rangers, known as “Amot Rangers,” has begun as directed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. He added that these rangers would be deployed to key locations to enhance security.

He assured the people of Ondo State that the new unit would specifically target the security challenges posed by the influx of criminals, particularly in forested areas.

“The new unit was established in line with the Ondo State Livestock Rearing and Grazing Regulation and Ranches Establishment Law of 2021 (as amended),” Adeleye explained.

He added, “The law mandates Amotekun Corps to oversee and enforce peaceful relationships between farmers, herders, and forest inhabitants.”

“In view of Mr. Governor’s directive, we are immediately establishing six major control points for a special unit of the Amotekun Corps that is coded ‘Amot Rangers’,” Adeleye said.

He further stated, “The ‘Amot Rangers’ will live and stay in the forests to control the excesses of these miscreants causing trouble in Ondo State.”

“These six control points cut across the troubled borders around Edo, Kogi, Kwara, and Ekiti states,” he added.

Adeleye also mentioned that two of the nine suspects paraded were arrested for attempting to kill private security guards during a robbery, while the others were caught for snatching commercial motorcycles.
