Olympics: Team Nigeria finishes last in 4x400m mixed relay race
Nigeria was left disappointed in the semi-final of the 4×400 mixed relay Heat 1 after coming last despite a bright start at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The relay which made its Olympic debut in Tokyo featured teams of two men and two women competing against each other in any order they choose.
The quartet of Ifeanyi Emmanuel Ojeli, Imaobong Nse Uko, Samson Oghenewegba Nathaniel and Patience Okon George were lined up in a way that was entirely different from all other teams by putting a male runner on the third leg during the first heat.
Reuters reports that Samson Nathaniel gave Patience Okon George a lead of about 30 metres but she was comfortably passed by all the men in the final leg of the relay.
Despite coming last, the Nigerians set a new African Record of 3:13.60 after behind the first leg with Ojeli who passed the baton to Uko for second and the third leg was taken by Nathaniel, who opened up a gap of over 100 metres against other female runners.
However, male counterparts from other teams caught up with George, making the Nigerian team finish fifth.
Poland topped the timesheets in the heats after the United States team were disqualified.
Dominican Republic were also disqualified, although they had finished outside the qualifying places for Saturday’s final.
