Why I support upcoming artists - Olamide

Nigerian rapper, Olamide, has addressed the controversy that followed his recent comment ranking Wizkid as the top Afrobeats act after Fela Kuti.

The debate erupted after Olamide made the remark during a press briefing in Toronto, Canada.

Fans of Burna Boy and Davido took to social media to push back, arguing that their favourite artists also deserved recognition at the top.

Reacting on his X handle, Olamide noted that people will always have differing opinions about music and artists.

He added that the industry is large enough for every artist to succeed, emphasizing that music lovers are free to support whoever they choose without diminishing the achievements of others.

Olamide also pointed out that Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid have grown past taking offense at rankings, explaining that their success comes from focusing on their craft rather than engaging in debates over opinions.

He wrote: “Honestly, this whole lengthy 3-way conversation is pretty much whatever. You can’t diminish anyone’s greatness, whether they’re A-list, B-list, or anything else. Feel free to believe what you want or support whoever you choose – there’s plenty of room in the sky for everyone.

“However, one thing to remember is that Burna, David, and Wiz aren’t narrow-minded enough to get offended by someone else’s opinion or perspective. That’s part of why they’ve reached where they are today.”
