Former United States President Barack Obama has included songs by Nigerian stars Olamide and Burna Boy in his list of favourite songs for 2025, further highlighting the global rise of Afrobeats.
Obama shared the annual list on his social media pages on Thursday night, continuing a tradition he started while in office, where he recommends his favourite books, movies and music at the end of each year.
“As 2025 comes to a close, I’m continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House: sharing my annual lists of favourite books, movies, and music,” Obama wrote.
“I hope you find something new to enjoy — and please send any recommendations for me to check out!” he added.
Among the 30 songs selected for the year are Burna Boy’s “TaTaTa”, which features American rapper Travis Scott, and Olamide’s “99”, a collaboration with Asake, Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn and British singer Daecolm.
Burna Boy’s “TaTaTa” was released on May 21, 2025, through Atlantic Records and later appeared on his eighth studio album, No Sign of Weakness, which dropped on July 10. The song blends Burna Boy’s Afro-fusion sound with Travis Scott’s trap style.
Olamide’s “99” was released in June 2025 as one of the standout tracks from his eleventh studio album, Olamidé. The song focuses on themes of wealth, enjoyment and carefree living, with contributions from some of Nigeria’s most popular young artistes.
Obama’s recognition of the two songs sparked excitement among fans online and added to the growing list of Nigerian music moments celebrated on the global stage.
This is not the first time the former US president has highlighted Nigerian artistes. His 2024 playlist featured Rema’s “Yayo” and Asake’s collaboration with Travis Scott, “Active”.
Also making Obama’s 2025 music list is Nigerian-born, London-based singer Obongjayar, whose song “Not In Surrender” was included.
Other artistes on the playlist include Kendrick Lamar and SZA, Lady Gaga, Drake, Olivia Dean, BLACKPINK, Bruce Springsteen, Rosalía, Gunna and Chappell Roan, among others.
In addition to music, Obama also released his favourite movies and books of the year. His top films include One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet and Orwell: 2+2=5, while his book picks feature titles by authors such as Beth Macy, Susan Choi, Jill Lepore, Zadie Smith and his wife, Michelle Obama.
