Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has ordered the transfer of security personnel who stopped his supporters from entering the government house during his Supreme Court victory celebration.
Supporters, including market women and members of the All Progressives Congress, had gathered early on Friday at the Benin Airport to welcome Okpebholo. His flight arrived around 12:40 p.m. and the supporters followed his motorcade to the government house on foot while singing in solidarity.
However, security officers at the government house told them that only Very Important Personalities would be allowed into the venue for refreshments. This upset the crowd who felt disrespected despite their support.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo condemned the action and described it as unauthorised and against the spirit of the celebration. He said he has set up a committee to investigate those involved in the incident.
He said, “This decision did not originate from me, nor does it reflect my values. I will never knowingly authorise any action that disrespects our supporters or members of the press. As a governor elected by the people, I remain committed to openness, inclusion, and respect for every stakeholder.”
He added that his administration will not tolerate actions that seek to ridicule or alienate the people who stood by him.
