Esther Okoronkwo has promised to keep delivering strong performances for the Super Falcons after helping Nigeria to a 3-0 win against Tunisia in their opening match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The AFC Toronto striker came on in the second half and changed the pace of the game with her quick runs and sharp dribbles. She hit the post in the 73rd minute and later provided an assist for Chiwendu Ihezuo’s goal, which sealed Nigeria’s third of the night.
“It doesn’t matter where I start — what matters is the impact I have on the game,” Okoronkwo told CAFonline.com after being named Woman of the Match.
The Super Falcons were dominant from the first whistle at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring, followed by Omorinsola Babajide before Ihezuo wrapped it up.
Head coach Justine Madugu praised the team’s performance, saying starting the tournament with a win was key.
“It always feels good each time you set out to go out for a game. The ultimate goal for you is to win. And the fact that the team won, obviously, it is only natural that we are happy that the team won,” Madugu said.
Despite a number of missed chances, Nigeria’s attacking style kept the Tunisian defense under pressure throughout the match.
Algeria also defeated Botswana 1-0 in the group’s other match. Nigeria now sits at the top of Group A on goal difference.
The Super Falcons will play their next game against Botswana on Wednesday at the same venue.
