Okonjo-Iweala to address Nigerian lawyers on rebuilding the nation

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is set to deliver a keynote address at the annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association. The conference, themed “Pressing Forward: A National Posture For Rebuilding Nigeria,” will bring together more than 20,000 legal practitioners in Lagos from August 23 to 30.

The President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, revealed this during the unveiling of the conference’s logo and theme in Abuja. He emphasized the pivotal role lawyers can play in national development and urged them to embrace change.

“As lawyers, we need to change our attitude towards how we do things. If we are dissatisfied with our current situation, then we have to change the way we do things,” Maikyau stated.

Highlighting the challenges facing Nigeria, Maikyau stressed the need for a shift in mindset among legal practitioners. He expressed optimism about the country’s potential but lamented the disparity between its resources and its reality.

The NBA President announced Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as the keynote speaker, citing her as a model for excellence. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s address is anticipated to provide insights into rebuilding Nigeria and leveraging its potential for growth.

The Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Mrs. Oyinkasola Badejo-Okusanya, noted the significant increase in expected attendance compared to previous conferences, underlining the importance of the event in shaping the legal landscape of Nigeria.
