Former captain of the Super Eagles, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has refuted widespread rumours suggesting he intends to run for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Speculation intensified following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday—a result that reignited public criticism and calls for the resignation of the current NFF leadership under Ibrahim Gusau.

In the wake of mounting dissatisfaction and growing calls for change within the football administration, reports began circulating that Okocha was positioning himself as a potential successor to Gusau.

The former Nigerian international and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner, however, promptly addressed the rumours, firmly disassociating himself from any political aspirations within the NFF.

“Hello everyone, I just want to use this opportunity to say that the news and post that have been circulating is false,” Okocha stated. “I have not said or spoken to anyone about Nigerian football or any interest on becoming NFF president, I’m currently in Kigali attending SPORTSBIZAFRICA.

“So, I’m pleading with the people spreading false information to stop.

“I appreciate my people and understand the frustration we’re going through, but be rest assured that better days are ahead, let’s keep believing. I know that it is not easy but we are all in it together.

“God bless and please let’s stay strong.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup remain uncertain. The Super Eagles currently trail Group C leaders by six points, with only two matches left to play.

The national team is set to resume their qualification campaign in October, facing Lesotho and Benin Republic in matchdays nine and ten.
