The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a truck driver, Olalere Timileyin, and his motor boy for their alleged involvement in the death of a man accused of stealing a tarpaulin.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday.
According to Odutola, the incident occurred in Obada Oko, Abeokuta. The suspects, who are associated with a cement factory in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area, allegedly assaulted the man until he lost consciousness.
“Around 3 am on Friday, December 13, one Alao Fadipe of Iyana Ikereku reported seeing some individuals fighting on the road in front of his house. On reaching the scene, he observed that the truck driver and his motor boy were assaulting the man over a stolen tarpaulin,” Odutola said.
Police operatives from the Obada Oko division responded to the complaint, arresting the driver and his motor boy.
“The injured man was promptly taken to the State Hospital, Ijaye, for medical care but sadly passed away during treatment,” Odutola added.
The deceased’s body has been deposited in a morgue for an autopsy, while efforts are being made to contact his family.
“The suspects are being interrogated, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Eleweran, for further investigation,” the police spokesperson explained.
The Ogun State Police Command also issued a warning to residents against engaging in street fights or acts of violence that could disrupt public peace during the festive season and beyond.
Authorities have assured the public that they will continue to maintain law and order in the state.
