The Ogun State Government has shut down 45 places, including churches, mosques, clubs, and business centres, for breaking noise pollution rules in 2024.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, during the 2025 International Noise Awareness Day. This year’s theme is “Protect Your Hearing, Protect Your Health.”
According to Oresanya, 175 other centres were also punished last year for causing excessive noise.
“Noise pollution is not just an environmental issue. It also affects people’s health and peace of mind,” he said. “While communication is important, we must be mindful of the noise we produce.”
He explained that the state government has set limits for noise levels in different places. These include:
Residential areas: 50 decibels in the day, 35 at night
- Places of worship: 60 decibels in the day, 40 at night
- Entertainment and commercial areas: 60 decibels in the day, 40 at night
He said most of the offenders were religious centres, entertainment spots, and business outlets.
“The government shut down 45 of these in 2024 and sanctioned 175 others,” he stated.
Dr Oresanya advised everyone—from families to business owners—to follow the noise rules to avoid being penalized.
He also urged Community Development Associations (CDAs) to monitor noise levels in their areas and make sure residents obey the rules.
“We will continue to educate the public and work with all stakeholders to ensure that noise pollution is reduced across the state,” he added.
