Ogun okada riders to register digitally for security, accountability

Commercial motorcycle riders in Ogun State will now undergo digital registration as part of efforts to improve security and accountability in the transport sector.

The decision was announced after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, where the chairmen of okada riders’ associations, represented by Kayode Showunmi, said the move was necessary due to rising criminal activities linked to some riders.

Showunmi stated that about 80% of okada riders in the state would be enrolled in a Unique Identification System. This system, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation and security agencies, will help monitor and regulate their operations.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Alhaji Olufodun Moibi, clarified that the scheme was not a government-issued permit but a union-led registration system requested by security agencies. He urged union leaders to inform their members about this difference.

Adebanjo Juwon, Consultant for the Commercial Motorcycle Rider Identification Scheme, explained that each registered rider would receive a unique ID number, with their details stored securely and linked to the National Identification Number database.

To make identification easier, riders will also be given reflective jackets with colour-coded designs and three-digit ID numbers. Security agents will use these to verify their identity quickly.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, AIG Olushola Subair (rtd.), advised that only recognised riders’ associations, including the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria, Riders and Owners of Motorcycle Organisation, and Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association, should handle the registration. He also called for collaboration with security agencies to ensure smooth implementation.

Subair praised all stakeholders for supporting the initiative, saying it would help address many of the security concerns surrounding commercial motorcycle operations in the state.
