A weightlifter, Oluwasola Oladunjoye, has accused Korede Hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State, of causing the death of his pregnant wife, Islamiat, but the hospital has denied the allegations.
According to Daily Trust, Oladunjoye’s wife passed away in the hospital on Sunday due to complications following a cesarean section performed by a medical team.
Oladunjoye explained that the doctor who operated on his wife allegedly abandoned her when he refused to pay an additional ₦150,000, in addition to the ₦300,000 he had already been charged.
He stated “Later, I was invited into the theatre room. When I got there, the second doctor was the one who killed my wife. He told me to pay another ₦150,000, aside from the initial charges of ₦300,000. When I challenged him, he explained that the extra charge was because the baby was not in good condition. Then, I left.”
However, Oladunjoye claimed that after he left the theatre, he received a call asking him to return.
To his surprise, he found the same doctor donating blood to his wife. Shortly afterward, he was informed that his wife had died.
Reacting to the accusations, the hospital’s management claimed Oladunjoye was negligent.
The Chairman of Korede Hospital, Dr. Tayo Apampa, stated that Oladunjoye’s wife was not initially a patient at their hospital but was brought in as an emergency case.
Apampa explained, “The doctors went into the theatre straight away without receiving any payment. They brought out the baby but noticed that the scars from her previous surgeries had torn and were bleeding. They took steps to address the issue.”
He noted that after the surgery, they discovered that the woman’s blood level was low, and they tried to find blood donors. When they couldn’t find anyone, the doctor donated his own blood to save her life.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, they couldn’t save the woman’s life, and she passed away.
The hospital maintains that it acted in the best interest of the patient, given the emergency situation.
