Police in Ogun State have arrested a 20-year-old man, Akeem Sumonu, for allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl in Olodo Community, Odeda Local Government Area.

The suspect was arrested on Tuesday at the community’s security post after the victim’s mother, identified as Christiana, reported the incident to the police.

According to the Ogun State Police spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, “The victim hid the incident from her parents until the complainant noticed unusual signs on her body. She then confided in her mother, revealing that the suspect had forcibly raped her, causing her to lose her virginity, and had threatened her not to tell anyone.”

The assault reportedly took place in October 2024, but the victim kept quiet due to threats from the suspect. The situation became more serious when medical tests showed the girl was eight weeks pregnant.

“The suspect has been arrested and detained. Further investigation will take place once the case is transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Odutola added.

After his arrest, Sumonu reportedly admitted to violently assaulting the girl and threatening her to keep quiet about the incident.

This case follows a similar incident reported in March 2024, where a pastor, Adeleye Dada, was accused of raping and impregnating a teenage church member’s daughter in the Gasline area of Ifo Local Government Area. In that case, the suspect allegedly took the victim to another church under the pretense of special prayers.

The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure justice is served.
