The Ogun State government has urged factories in the state to provide their workers with adequate kits, including eye protection, to prevent eye damage.
The government said its research had revealed that factory workers in the state had a higher rate of blindness than the general population.
The Health Commissioner, Dr Tomi Coker, said at a press conference to mark World Sight Day 2023 with the theme, ‘Love your eyes at work,’ “We are appealing to factories and employers as well, they must ensure that they give their employees eye protection and also ensure that the workplace is safe.
“We have found out in Ogun State, in particular, that the proportion of blind people among the factory workers is much higher than in the general population,” the commissioner said.
The commissioner also said that the government had given out 250 free eyeglasses, also known as ‘Jigi Dapo’ to the craftsmen at the Mechanic Village, Abeokuta.
