The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Kunle Oluomo, has been impeached by 18 out of 36 members during a plenary session on Tuesday. Oluomo faced allegations of embezzlement of funds, highhandedness, and related offences.

In response to the impeachment, the Assembly swiftly elected Oludaisi Elemide as the new Speaker.

Oluomo had previously encountered legal troubles, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned him before a Federal High Court in Lagos on September 6, 2022. The charges included an alleged N2.475bn money laundering scheme.

The EFCC accused Oluomo and three others of committing offences such as conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering between 2019 and 2022 in Ogun State.

According to the EFCC’s prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), they stole N2.475bn from the treasury of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Despite the legal challenges, Oluomo was granted bail, allowing the trial to continue.
