The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has cleared the air on the arrest of the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano.

WuzupNigeria reported the shocking news of Obiano’s arrest on Thursday night hours after his successor, Charles Soludo, was sworn into the seat of power in the state.

Obiano was reportedly bolting the country through the Lagos International Airport when the EFCC picked him up.

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, the Public Relations Officer of the commission, Wilson Uwajaren revealed that Obiano has been on the watchlist of the agency for a while.

However, Uwajaren revealed that the agency didn’t arrest him earlier because he had immunity as a governor, hence the need to arrest him after he lost his immunity.

He said, “Obiano has been on our watchlist for some time now. He had immunity as a governor and that is why we could not arrest him before now.

“Today[Thursday] he lost the immunity and was travelling out of the country before we finally arrested him”.

Recall that Obiano’s wife, Ebelechukwu, drew unnecessary attention to herself during Soludo’s inauguration on Thursday after a fight broke out between her and Mrs Bianca Ojukwu, the widow of the late Biafra leader – Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

Reports revealed that Mrs Obiano slapped Mrs Ojukwu immediately after Soludo took his oath of office, though the cause of the exchange remains hazy.

Obiano and his wife stormed out of the venue almost immediately after the dirty fight with the late Ojukwu’s wife.

Meanwhile, an All Progressives Congress lawmaker, yesterday, advised the new governor not to end up like his predecessor whom he claimed started well but ended badly.

“My advice to the incoming governor, Prof. Soludo, is that he should not make the same mistakes his predecessor[Obiano] made so that at the end of his tenure, he will be remembered for good,” Dr Timothy Ifedioranma who represents Njikoka Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly said.
