The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has debunked reports claiming that the arrested immediate-past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has been released from detention.
WuzupNigeria reported that Obiano was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, hours after his successor, Prof. Charles Soludo, was sworn in on Thursday.
Reports circulating on Friday morning claimed that Obiano who was arrested for allegedly mismanaging over N17bn Paris Club refund and security vote had been freed from the anti-graft agency’s detention.
However, in a chat with The PUNCH, the Public Relations Officer of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, revealed that Obiano was not released but transferred to Abuja on Friday morning.
“He’s still with the commission. He was even transferred from Lagos to Abuja this morning,” Uwujaren said.
Recall that in a chat with BBC Pidgin, Uwujaren revealed that “Obiano has been on our watchlist for some time now. He had immunity as a governor and that is why we could not arrest him before now.
“Today[Thursday] he lost the immunity and was travelling out of the country before we finally arrested him”.
