ICYMI: Obi proposes single five-year presidential term in Nigeria

ICYMI:

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has advocated for a constitutional reform to limit the Nigerian presidency to a single term of five years.

Obi made this proposition during a visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Government House in Bauchi on Friday.

Drawing a comparison with South Korea’s political system, Obi argued that a single-term presidency would push leaders to focus on governance rather than re-election campaigns.

“If I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for presidents. It should be five years,” he said.

“That is what is in South Korea, so people come in and know that they have a job to do.

“What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the year thinking about the next tenure. Let’s stop it, let’s face the real job,” Obi stated.
