Fresh information has surfaced regarding a private meeting between Peter Obi and Goodluck Jonathan, amid increasing political consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to reports by Politics Nigeria, the discussion was held on Monday at Jonathan’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, and lasted approximately two hours.

Obi, a key contender in the 2027 race and former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, attended the meeting alongside a delegation of notable South-East leaders.

Those in attendance included former Enugu State governor Okwesilize Nwodo, former Imo State governor Achike Udenwa, former Managing Director of the NDDC Onyema Ugochukwu, as well as Senators Ben Obi and Victor Umeh.

Addressing journalists after the engagement, Obi explained that the visit formed part of broader consultations with past national leaders.

He stressed that the purpose was not to seek endorsement at this point, but to exchange ideas and gain insight.

“We need to consult them, especially someone like him (Jonathan) who served the country very faithfully, focused, and did what is expected in a democracy. In this declining situation, you consult him,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor revealed that he is currently considering his political future within the African Democratic Congress, noting that discussions remain ongoing and that no formal request for endorsement has been presented to Jonathan.

He further disclosed that the meeting centred on national concerns and the need to reinforce democratic principles, adding that Jonathan expressed worries about the country’s direction and highlighted the importance of credible elections.

“He wished that we had a free, fair, credible election.

“There can’t be a one-party system. He cannot support such a thing. Nobody can claim to be more of a democrat in this country than Jonathan,” Obi stated.

Despite increasing speculation about possible alliances ahead of 2027, Obi maintained that endorsement was not part of the discussions during the visit.

“We’re not talking about an endorsement yet. When I become a candidate, I’ll come back for endorsement. He wishes the country well. We are here to consult with him,” he added.

The meeting is part of Obi’s ongoing consultation efforts. In recent weeks, he has also held talks with other former Nigerian leaders, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, as he continues to build momentum ahead of next year’s election.
