Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged his supporters to vote for the African Democratic Congress in the upcoming by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025.
Obi explained that the LP will not have any candidates on the ballot, as the Independent National Electoral Commission did not recognise any nominees from the party due to an unresolved internal crisis.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, Obi stated, “On the 16th of August 2025, Nigerians will go to the polling units again for the by-elections.
This is expected to take place in the 16 states of the federation, with two senatorial, five federal house of representatives and nine state assembly seats available for voting.”
He continued, “Kindly note that the Labour Party has no candidates recognised by INEC due to the internal crisis. I humbly urge every member of the Obidient and COPDEM families to go out and vote for the coalition political party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in their respective states. The struggle for Nigeria has started.”
The internal division within the LP stems from a leadership tussle that saw candidates emerge from primaries organised by the Julius Abure-led national working committee, a development not recognised by INEC.
On August 5, the faction of the LP loyal to Nenadi Usman expressed satisfaction with INEC’s decision to exclude the Abure-backed candidates. The group described the move as a welcome development and expressed confidence that INEC would eventually publish the candidate list submitted by what it referred to as the party’s “lawful leadership.”
