Obi donates N10m to Ebonyi nursing college

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to improving education, healthcare, and empowerment as key factors for Nigeria’s development.

Obi made this known on Friday through a statement on X, following his visit to Mater Misericordiae College of Nursing Sciences in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.

During his visit, Obi praised the institution for its long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

“Established in 1946, it is one of Nigeria’s pioneering healthcare institutions,” he said. “Its Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, founded in 1952 and 1953, have produced thousands of professionals who continue to play vital roles in the medical field.”

He acknowledged the college’s ongoing infrastructural improvements and the enrollment of about 1,000 students. To support its efforts, Obi pledged to collaborate with the institution in training healthcare professionals and made an initial donation of ₦10 million.

“The college currently has about 1,000 students and is undertaking several infrastructural upgrades. To support their efforts, I reaffirmed my commitment to collaborating with them in training Nigerian healthcare professionals and made an initial donation of ₦10 million,” he said.

While addressing the students, Obi stressed the importance of healthcare as a key part of human development. He also encouraged them to stay committed to their studies, especially as the demand for healthcare workers continues to rise globally.

“I underscored the importance of healthcare as a fundamental indicator of human development and acknowledged the invaluable role of nurses and medical practitioners in national progress,” he stated. “I urged them to remain dedicated to their studies, especially in light of the increasing global demand for healthcare workers.”

Obi also appreciated the dedication of the institution’s staff and thanked the Ebonyi State Government for working with the school to advance healthcare education.

“I also commended the institution’s staff for their dedication and the remarkable work they are doing. Additionally, I appreciate the Ebonyi State Government for its collaboration with the school in the shared interest of the state and the nation,” he added.

Obi has been vocal about his support for education and healthcare, often emphasizing their role in building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
