The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent terrorist attack on a community in Niger State, describing the incident as a national disgrace.

In a statement posted on his verified X account on Sunday, Obi decried the persistent wave of violence across the country and urged authorities to bring an immediate end to the worsening security situation.

He said Nigeria urgently needs an all-hands-on-deck approach that is coordinated, capable and decisive to confront the insecurity that has become a daily experience for many citizens.

Obi expressed concern that despite the beginning of a new year, killings and violent attacks continue unabated across the country.

He cited the attack on Kasuwan-Daji Market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, where over 40 people were reportedly killed in a terrorist assault.

The former Anambra State governor also recalled other recent attacks, including the assault on Bong village in the Doemak District of Plateau State, bandit attacks on communities in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State, and the New Year’s Day attack on Unguwar Naino community in Katsina State, which left several people dead and others injured.

According to Obi, the incidents point to a troubling trend of violence that has become dangerously normalised across the country.

He described the government’s inability to ensure the safety of lives and property as shameful, stressing that the toll on families and communities is devastating and beyond measure.

Obi maintained that the protection of citizens must remain the government’s foremost responsibility and warned that Nigerians should not accept the continued bloodshed as normal.

He offered his condolences to families affected by the attacks in Niger, Plateau, Kano, Katsina and other parts of the country, assuring them of national solidarity in their moment of grief, and concluded that the recurring violence must be stopped.
