A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Segun Showunmi, has stated that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, stands a real chance of winning the 2027 general election only if he returns to the main opposition party.

Showunmi made the assertion during an appearance on the Mic On Show podcast, where he emphasized the need for Obi to align with a more established political platform to boost his chances at the polls.

He noted that Obi enjoys widespread support beyond his South East base, with significant numbers in the South-South, North Central, and Christian regions of the North.

“If his numbers and the animated energy that is following him were to follow him into the PDP and he is the presidential candidate, I can guarantee you Peter would take the Southeast, Peter would take the South-South, Peter would take the Christian North, and Peter would take the North Central,” Showunmi stated.

Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State, exited the PDP ahead of the 2023 elections to join the Labour Party. In that contest, he ran against Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

Despite winning in 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Obi was ultimately defeated, with Tinubu declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
