Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has granted pardons to ten inmates with less than one year left on their sentences in the state’s correctional centres.

This pardon was given as part of the governor’s prerogative of mercy.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Hon. Justice P.O. Isibor (Rtd).

He explained that the council received a request from the Benin Correctional Service, dated November 5, 2024, which asked for clemency for inmates nearing the end of their sentences.

In his statement, Justice Isibor said, “The Council convened a meeting where their applications were scrutinized and unanimously made appropriate recommendations. Mr. Governor is respectfully invited to consider and approve the recommendations of the Council.”

The governor approved the recommendations, leading to the release of the following inmates: Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah.
