The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has formally announced her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
She disclosed her ambition during an interview on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports hosted by Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami.
According to her, she has fully returned to active partisan politics after spending years away from the frontline.
Iyabo confirmed that she has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and has completed her registration with the party, signalling her readiness to pursue her political aspiration under its platform.
Addressing speculation about her next political move, she dismissed any possibility of contesting for the Senate again, maintaining that her sights are firmly set on the state’s top office.
“The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship. And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. That’s the journey I’m on, and we are very serious about it. I mean, we are very dedicated to it.”
Iyabo Obasanjo previously served as Commissioner for Health in Ogun State between 2003 and 2007. She also represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2007 to 2011.
Outside the political arena, she is recognised for her humanitarian engagements through the Iyaniwura Foundation, which has delivered health and social support initiatives to vulnerable communities across Ogun State.
Her declaration has reportedly begun attracting endorsements from traditional institutions within the state.
