Obasanjo hosts memorial service for late US president Jimmy Carter

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo held a memorial service on Sunday in honor of his close friend and ally, late United States President Jimmy Carter.

The service took place on Sunday at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King, located in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State. I

t was organized to pay tribute to Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, USA.

Carter, the 39th President of the United States, made history as the longest-living US president and the first to reach 100 years of age.

Obasanjo, who delivered a heartfelt tribute titled “Jimmy Carter: The Departure of a Titan,” described the late president as a global icon and a champion of peace and human rights.

“Jimmy Carter was not just a friend but a towering figure who dedicated his life to service and humanity. His legacy as a peacemaker and advocate for justice will continue to inspire generations,” Obasanjo said during the service.

The President of the Baptist Convention, Reverend Israel Akanji, delivered a special sermon, reflecting on Carter’s life of service and his impact on the world.

Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, stated that the memorial service was a testament to the deep bond shared between the two leaders.

“President Obasanjo considered Jimmy Carter a true friend and ally. Their shared commitment to global peace and development brought them together on numerous occasions,” Akinyemi said.

The service was attended by dignitaries, religious leaders, and members of the public who came to honor Carter’s life and legacy.

Carter’s presidency (1977–1981) was marked by significant achievements, including his efforts in international diplomacy and human rights advocacy. Even after leaving office, he continued his humanitarian work through the Carter Center, focusing on global health and conflict resolution.

Obasanjo’s tribute underscored Carter’s enduring impact: “He was a man of vision and values, who brought hope to millions and showed the world what leadership should be.”
