The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has imposed an indefinite suspension on some of its members for organizing illegal elections within the national body of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers.

The details of the suspension were outlined in a letter addressed to the affected members and signed by the General Secretary of NUPENG, Comrade Afolabi Olawale. A copy of the letter was made available to the press on Friday.

The letter in part stated, “The national secretariat of NUPENG is in possession of documentary, audio, and video evidence of you and some other individuals illegally organizing and conducting elections for the national offices of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of the Union in Abuja, in the early hours of Tuesday, 31st October 2023.

“This was in disobedience and contempt of the judgment of Hon. Justice Bashar Alkali of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, in the Yenagoa Judicial Division, held at Yenagoa in Suit No. NICN/YEN/L/2022, which nullified the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of NUPENG’s election held on 30th June 2022 in Ibadan, Oyo State. It dissolved the former executive and mandated the National Secretariat of NUPENG to conduct fresh elections for the national offices of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of the union, pending when the National Executive Council of the Union shall take appropriate actions and measures on the matter.”

The union, however, expressed its confidence in its Deputy President and General Secretary, acknowledging their satisfactory discharge of duties.

NUPENG urged Nigerians to disregard any conflicting information originating from sources other than the recognized PTD structure led by the National Chairman, Comrade Augustine Egbon.
