The National Universities Commission has granted full accreditation for 34 programmes at the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti.
FUTES Registrar, Oluwole Dada, confirmed the approval in a statement on Thursday, saying it cleared the way for the school to begin its first academic session in 2025/2026.
He explained that the accreditation followed a week-long inspection by NUC teams, who assessed the university’s facilities, including laboratories, classrooms, hostels, library, clinic, and teaching equipment.
Dada said the aim of the exercise was to test the school’s readiness to provide world-class training in science, engineering, technology, computing, and environmental sciences.
Vice Chancellor of FUTES, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, described the approval as “a milestone that affirms the university’s readiness to provide 21st-century education.”
Aribisala encouraged candidates to choose FUTES on the JAMB portal, stressing that admissions would be strictly merit-based.
“We are here for academic excellence and that is the standard we want to set from the onset. Students who performed well in JAMB, WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB will be admitted purely on merit,” he said.
He also warned parents against dealing with admission agents, insisting that the university has no representatives for payments or admission processing.
The VC advised prospective students to rely on official updates from the school’s website, [www.futes.edu.ng](http://www.futes.edu.ng), or the Registrar’s office.
The accredited courses cut across four faculties. In the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, programmes include Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering.
For the Faculty of Science, approved programmes are Biochemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Forensic Science, Geology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, Animal and Environmental Biology, Biotechnology, Science Laboratory Technology, and Environmental Management and Toxicology.
In the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, courses include Architecture, Building Technology, Estate Management and Valuation, Environmental Management, Industrial Design, Quantity Surveying, Surveying and Geoinformatics, and Urban and Regional Planning.
The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology got accreditation for Software Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Information Communication and Technology.
President Bola Tinubu had, in February 2025, signed two bills establishing FUTES, Iyin Ekiti, and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State.
According to his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, the schools are expected to drive research, boost innovation, and train professionals in agriculture, science, and technology to strengthen Nigeria’s economy.
Tinubu later appointed Senator Binta Garba as Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council of FUTES. Onanuga described her as “a seasoned politician, businesswoman, and administrator,” who represented Adamawa North in the Senate between 2015 and 2019.
