NSF: Gunshots as irate youths disrupt boxing event
At least three boxing fights were suspended following the disruption of the ongoing National Sports Festival in Edo State on Tuesday.
This is as a result of the violence that ensued in a previous fight as some disgruntled home fans protested an unfavourable result at the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre.
Some home fans reportedly attempted to intimidate a referee by chanting war songs in an attempt to prevent an imminent announcement of the likely defeat of Team Edo’s Lydia Uhumwangho by Bayelsa’s Jacinta Umunnekwe.
The events then escalated as pleas from Edo State government officials proved futile, forcing spectators to flee the venue as gunshots were heard outside the hall as the irate fans locked the gate to the venue.
Thereafter, the disconnection of power within the venue for few minutes by unknown persons compounded the already tense situation, as people, including the security personnel, ran for dear life, even in the dark.
The fights suspended include the 91kg bout between Lagos and Ondo states (male), +81kg fight between Ondo and Delta and +91kg bout between Delta and Enugu.
