The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has opened an investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners. These people were detained following enforcement operations in Niger State.
According to The PUNCH, the miners were arrested during operations conducted by the Niger State Command in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis on September 15 and 16 as part of efforts to tackle illegal mining.
Reports cited by the newspaper indicated that no fewer than 33 miners were feared dead after being held at an NSCDC facility in Minna. However, the Corps has not announced a definitive death toll.
The deaths were reportedly discovered early on Thursday.
NSCDC orders high-level investigation
NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi has directed the establishment of an investigative team. The team is led by the Deputy Commandant General responsible for Intelligence and Investigation.
The team will examine the condition of the suspects when they were arrested. It will also look at how long they remained in custody. Moreover, the team will examine detention conditions and the medical attention provided to them.
“The team has been mandated to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths,” the Corps said.
The Niger State Commandant, Suberu Aniviye, had reportedly linked the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak.
However, the NSCDC National Headquarters said no cause had been officially established.
Corps awaits medical findings
The agency said any suggestion that the deaths resulted from a particular disease remained subject to medical and laboratory confirmation.
“The Corps will therefore refrain from speculation until the outcome of the medical examination is established,” the statement said.
Audi also ordered officials to prioritise the health and welfare of other people being held in custody. In addition, measures are being taken to protect personnel who may have come into contact with the deceased.
The Corps expressed condolences to the families of those who died. It promised that its investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
