The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has identified Kaduna State as the top hotspot for railway vandalism in Nigeria, with a growing number of incidents threatening the state’s transportation and security.
NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi revealed on Friday that over 267 individuals involved in railway vandalism have been arrested across the country in the past three years.
Afolabi noted, “Curiously, most of these arrests were made within the Nasarawa–Niger–Kaduna–Abuja–Plateau axis. Majorly, Kaduna State is the most targeted state by these railway vandals.”
Of the total arrests, 189 were conducted by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad.
One of the most significant recent arrests occurred in Kaduna, where 47 suspects were apprehended by the Nigerian Army’s One Division along the Kakau Daji-Anguwan Ayaba area in Chikun Local Government Area on June 26, 2024.
Afolabi also called for the Federal Government to establish a specialized team to expedite the legal process for prosecuting vandals, citing the slow pace of the current system.
He emphasized that tackling the vandalism crisis requires both swift legal action and strengthened security efforts.
