The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has intensified its efforts against illegal mining with a recent crackdown on unauthorized mining sites in Nasarawa State.

The operation, led by the Mining Marshal, resulted in the arrest of two locals and three foreign nationals involved in illegal mining activities.

Commander General of the Mining Marshals, J. A. Onoja, issued a statement on Sunday emphasizing the Corps’ dedication to protecting Nigeria’s critical infrastructure and promoting sustainable mining practices.

“We are committed to safeguarding the nation’s resources and ensuring that mining is conducted in a lawful and environmentally responsible manner,” Onoja said.

The Federal Government recently launched the “Mining Marshals” initiative to curb illegal mining operations across the country.

The launch was conducted by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as part of the celebrations for the 2024 International Civil Defence Day held at the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja.

During the ceremony, Minister Tunji-Ojo highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Mining Marshals and the Ministry of Solid Minerals.

He said, “The marshals will carry out their functions in conjunction with the Ministry of Solid Minerals,” underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring that the nation’s mineral wealth is protected from illegal exploitation.
