The National Sports Commission is preparing to give formal approval for Nigeria’s first official Flag Football Federation, with elections for new officers expected to follow once the body is inaugurated.

The plan was announced on Tuesday in a statement released by Kola Daniel, the Special Assistant on Media to the NSC Director General.

According to the NSC, no group in Nigeria or abroad has ever been officially recognised to represent the country in flag football. The commission explained that, by law, it is the only body empowered to approve and regulate sports federations in the country, including those for emerging sports such as flag football.

The NSC Director General said discussions are ongoing with all stakeholders to finalise a single, unified federation.

He said, “The National Sports Commission is currently engaging all stakeholders in flag football regarding the finalisation of a unified national federation. The NSC values the contributions of all groups and is committed to an inclusive governance structure that aligns with international standards and Nigeria’s sports development objectives.”

He added that the recognition process is still underway and that no final decision has been taken.

The commission assured athletes, coaches, organisations, and international partners that the new Flag Football Federation will operate with transparency and fairness and will meet global standards. It noted that the move will help Nigeria gain proper representation in international events.

The NSC said details about the election timetable, membership rules, and transition arrangements will be made public soon.
