The scheduled interface with the Security Chiefs faced a setback on Wednesday due to the absence of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Consequently, the Senate has issued summonses to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, compelling them to appear before it next Tuesday to address the escalating insecurity across the nation.
Additionally, the Senate extended invitations to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, and the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Previously, the Senate had summoned the Service Chiefs, including Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, to provide insights into the worsening security landscape in the country.
Following the admission of the Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police, and DG DSS into the Chamber on Wednesday, the Senate opted to postpone the session unexpectedly.
Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced the postponement and the issuance of fresh invitations during the plenary session, emphasizing the importance of having the Ministers of Defence, DG NIA, and the Minister of Interior present during the discussion with the Service Chiefs.
Consequently, the Senate discharged the Service Chiefs without obtaining any briefings from them, instructing them to return next Tuesday when the invited Ministers of Defence and other security officials would be in attendance.
