Train operations on the Warri-Itakpe corridor have been suspended after two coaches derailed near Agbor, Delta State, four days after services resumed.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, saying the derailment happened around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. It blamed possible vandalism for the accident.

Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, said no casualties were recorded as all passengers were safely evacuated to Agbor.

“We are pleased to confirm that all passengers on board were safely evacuated to Agbor, and everyone has been fully accounted for. No casualties or injuries were recorded,” Opeifa said.

He added that recovery operations had begun at the scene, supported by security officials, and that work was progressing steadily.

“As a precautionary measure, train services on the corridor have been temporarily suspended today to enable a comprehensive security and safety audit of the track and related infrastructure. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause our valued passengers and the general public,” the statement read.

Opeifa assured that normal train operations would resume once the tracks were confirmed safe for travel.

The Warri-Itakpe route has faced several disruptions in 2025. The NRC had earlier halted services in April after multiple engine failures and again in February due to a technical fault.

The rail service only resumed on October 29, 2025, after months of suspension before Saturday’s derailment forced another shutdown.
