The Nigerian Railway Corporation has suspended train operations along the busy Port Harcourt–Aba corridor, citing routine maintenance.
In a statement signed by the Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, on Friday, the NRC said services will resume on September 9, 2025.
“Port Harcourt to Aba train services suspended for routine maintenance to resume regular train services on the 9th of September 2025. We regret all inconveniences,” the statement read.
The sudden suspension has left many passengers worried, as the line is one of the most affordable and widely used routes for traders and low-income travelers across the South-East and South-South.
This comes at a time of growing concern over the safety of Nigeria’s rail system. Just recently, a Kaduna-bound train derailed, injuring several passengers and forcing a shutdown of services on that corridor.
Opeifa had earlier told journalists that the derailment left seven people injured, but the NRC later revised the figure to 20. He stressed that investigations were ongoing with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau and promised refunds for affected passengers.
The frequent disruptions have sparked calls for a full audit of NRC operations, with commuters questioning the corporation’s ability to provide safe and reliable services.
