The Governors in southeast Nigeria are considering officially naming May 30 as Biafra Day in honour of those who died during the civil war.

WUZUPNIGERIA reports that Dave Umahi, the Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum, hinted at the development on Tuesday, following the sit-at-home ordered by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra.

Umahi, who also doubles as the Ebonyi State Governor, said that there is nothing wrong in declaring May 30 Biafra remembrance day, according to Legit.

“People are beginning to say that even beyond the issue of sitting at home, there is a need to set aside a date to honour our brothers and sisters who died during the civil war and there is nothing wrong with doing that.

“If it comes before the southeast governors, we would give it consideration and put conditions and one of them would be that if anyone decides to do otherwise, you must allow the person to exercise his or her rights,” he said.

Recall that controversies trailed the 2021 Biafra Day remembrance which comes amidst attacks on Police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) establishments in the five eastern states.

Umahi, who appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, noted that the perpetrators are known indigenes of the region.

He said, “Let our people come out to speak out that the unknown gunmen are not really unknown gunmen, they are our young men and women who will defend our land tomorrow; they should stop giving themselves to be killed.”

Umahi however called for an end to insecurity in the region adding that the young people should protect the interest of the South East as future leaders.
