King Harald of Norway has been hospitalized while on a private winter holiday in Spain’s Canary Islands, the royal palace confirmed Tuesday.
Harald, who celebrated his 89th birthday on Saturday, was admitted Tuesday evening to a hospital in Tenerife.
In a statement, the palace said he was receiving treatment for an unspecified infection and dehydration, adding that he was in good condition.
The palace also announced that the king’s personal physician would travel to Tenerife to evaluate his health.
A further update is expected Wednesday after the doctor has completed the assessment.
According to the statement, King Harald and Queen Sonja were spending a winter vacation in Tenerife at the time of his hospitalization.
Harald V has reigned as Norway’s monarch since 1991.
