Should some northern states share in every FG revenue?

The Senator representing Osun Central Constituency and Chief Whip of the Senate, Olusola Adeyeye has suggested that some states do not deserve parts of the revenues shared by the Federal Government.

On Wednesday, the Senator asked why some northern states which banned alcohol consumption were benefiting from the revenue from the VAT paid on alcohol consumed in Lagos.

He made the suggestion during the debate on the bill seeking to compel the Federal Government to recognise Lagos as the country’s commercial capital.

The bill, which was sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was rejected in a rowdy session on Wednesday.

During the second reading of the bill, the Chief Whip, Sen. Olusola Adeyeye, one of those who supported the bill, had asked why the Federal Capital Territory was being subsidised by the Federal Government, whereas taxes were being paid for same government services in Lagos.

It was also during the debate that Adeyeye described the Federal Capital Territory  (FCT) as “a rotten pampered child,” leading to a rowdy session in the House.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, later ask Adeyeye to withdraw the statement. He complied. The sitting was then adjourned.

The question now is do you think states who banned alcohol consumption deserve revenue from alcohol tax?
