The Northern Support Group of the Peoples Democratic Party has declared its support for former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The endorsement was made public in a communiqué released following the group’s 8th meeting, which took place in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, from Wednesday to Thursday.

The statement was jointly signed by the Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and the North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi.

According to the communiqué, the group believes Jonathan is the most suitable candidate to restore unity within the PDP and promote national cohesion ahead of the next general elections. It described the former president as the “best option” to steer the party back to prominence.

Comprising PDP loyalists and affiliated support groups across the 19 northern states, the coalition also reaffirmed its support for the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. It praised his efforts toward reconciliation within the party, while also calling for disciplinary action against individuals allegedly involved in anti-party activities.

The group accused some party leaders of sabotaging internal peace initiatives and collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such actions threaten the PDP’s prospects in 2027. Despite these challenges, it maintained that the PDP continues to enjoy widespread grassroots support in the North.

Addressing concerns about Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, the group dismissed them as baseless, insisting that the matter had already been settled and should no longer be a point of contention within the party.

The communiqué concluded with a pledge of continued loyalty to the PDP and expressed optimism that, through unity and collective effort, the party can regain control at both federal and state levels in the next election cycle.
