The North East Governors Forum has pledged to strengthen small-scale irrigation farming and promote industrial development to tackle the adverse effects of climate change and enhance the region’s economic resilience.
In his opening remarks at the ninth meeting of the NEGF held in Yola, Adamawa State, on Saturday, the forum’s Chairman, Governor Babagana Zulum, emphasized the importance of agriculture as the cornerstone of the region’s economy and livelihood. He called for concerted efforts to bolster agricultural productivity and empower farmers.
Governor Zulum also stressed the need for stakeholder engagement in an industrial development program that would leverage local resources and stimulate economic growth within the region. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security across the country, including the North East region.
“We should be more committed to creating wealth for our people with a view of expanding sources of income and wealth creation to reduce the rate of unemployment by looking at various options by engaging the youth.
“I sincerely hope that with the support of the Federal Government, we should overcome these challenges,” he said.
Acknowledging the region’s multifaceted challenges, including security threats, poverty, and unemployment, Governor Zulum urged his colleagues to prioritize wealth creation initiatives that would expand income sources, reduce unemployment rates, and empower the region’s youth.
He expressed optimism that with the support of the Federal Government, these challenges could be overcome.
The host governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, lauded the NEGF’s efforts in positioning the region for sustainable development, highlighting the significant progress achieved during the forum’s four-year tenure.
He reiterated the forum’s commitment to addressing the region’s challenges and fostering a prosperous future for its citizens.
