North Central records highest road accidents in Nigeria – Report

Nigeria experienced 3,617 road traffic accidents in the final quarter of 2022, marking a 6.01% increase from the previous quarter’s 3,412 incidents and a 6.16% rise from the 3,407 accidents in Q4 2021.

This was disclosed by the National Bureau of Statistics during a data release in Abuja on Tuesday.

Among these accidents, serious cases were predominant in Q4 2022, totaling 2,411, while fatal cases amounted to 895, and minor cases numbered 311, according to the NBS.

Furthermore, compared to the preceding quarter, fatal and serious cases increased by 24.31% and 3.17%, respectively, whereas minor cases decreased by 12.39%.

Tragically, the data reveals that 1,309 males lost their lives in Q4 2022, accounting for 81.41% of the total 1,608 fatalities, with 299 (18.59%) females also losing their lives.

Additionally, 7,789 males sustained injuries during this period, constituting 76.12% of the 10,232 injured individuals, while 2,443 (23.88%) females were injured.

A total of 5,407 vehicles were involved in road traffic accidents in Q4 2022, representing a slight decrease of 0.26% compared to the previous quarter’s 5,421 incidents.

Regionally, the North-Central recorded the highest number of accidents in Q4 2022, with 1,247 cases, followed by the South-West with 862, while the South-South reported the fewest accidents, with only 207 incidents.

Similarly, the North-Central had the highest casualty count, with 3,536, followed by the North-West with 2,855, while the South-South recorded the fewest casualties, totaling 638.
