The National Orientation Agency has called on riverine communities in Nasarawa State along the River Benue to move to higher ground due to the impending threat of flooding.

The appeal comes as water levels in the river continue to rise, exacerbated by the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, during a stakeholders’ engagement on flood safety in Lafia, Nasarawa State’s capital, NOA Director General, Lanre Onilu, represented by Yusuf Kobi, Director of Planning, Research, and Strategy, emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent the loss of lives and property.

“We urge communities at risk to be proactive in avoiding a repeat of the devastating floods that occurred in 2012 and 2022,” Onilu stated.

The agency’s campaign covers 11 flood-prone states, including Kogi, Benue, Anambra, and Adamawa.

The NOA’s effort aims to raise awareness and intensify precautionary measures. In Nasarawa, local authorities and community leaders have joined the initiative to encourage residents to evacuate and adopt flood preparedness steps.

NOA’s Director in Nasarawa, Priscilla Gondoaluor, further urged residents to clear drainage systems, construct flood barriers, and stockpile essential supplies.

The traditional ruler, Aren Koron Kuje, Mr. Sunday Namo, praised the NOA’s efforts and reaffirmed the commitment of local chiefs to supporting the flood awareness campaign.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of preventing another flood disaster, ensuring the safety of lives and property.
