No plan to tax online content creators – FIRS
The Federal Inland Revenue Service has affirmed that it has no intentions to impose taxes on online content creators, particularly skit makers, as they fall outside the scope of the FIRS’s taxation framework.
According to the Nation, a staff member of the agency, speaking anonymously, clarified, “FIRS does not tax Personal Income Tax, States governments do. FIRS collects Company Income Tax. Only those who are corporate entities and earn profits of N25 million and above are mandated to pay tax.”
Contrary to recent media reports attributing statements to the FIRS regarding content creators and influencers as significant tax evaders, the agency refuted such claims.
In a recent development, FIRS unveiled a revamped structure aimed at enhancing the country’s tax administration. Dr. Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of FIRS, emphasized that the restructuring was geared towards adopting a more efficient and contemporary tax administration methodology.
Adedeji highlighted, “The agency is embracing an integrated tax approach, leveraging technology at every juncture. This approach positions FIRS at the forefront of innovation, ensuring that we meet the evolving needs of our taxpayers in a rapidly changing world.”
He further elaborated, “The structure advocates a comprehensive approach to taxpayer services, consolidating our core functions and support under one umbrella. By tailoring our services to specific taxpayer segments, we aim to simplify the taxpayer experience.”
