Nigerian fans of English Premiership side Arsenal FC will soon find more reasons to keep rooting for the football club come what may.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote has restated his determination to buy Arsenal within “three to four years”.

The businessman who is worth around $10.9billion, had said last year that he was prepared to pay any sum to acquire the club, fondly referred to as The Gunners, from Stan Kroenke. Kronke is the largest shareholder in the premiership club. Alisher Uzmanov, a Russian billionaire owns a 30.04 per cent stake in the club.

“Maybe three to four years,” Dangote told Bloomberg Television when asked when he intended to buy the club.

In what may be a reference to Nigeria’s current economic realities, the 59-year-old die-hard Arsenal fan added, “The issue is that we have more challenging headwinds. I need to get those out the way first and start having tailwinds. Then I’ll focus on this.”

“It’s not about buying Arsenal and just continuing with business as usual,” he said. “It’s about buying Arsenal and turning it around.

“I’ve run a very successful business and I think I can also run a very successful team. Right now, with what we’re facing, over 20billion dollars of projects, I cannot do both.”
