The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, has stated that there is no recent confirmation of a cholera outbreak in the state.
He made this clarification on Monday in Calabar while speaking with journalists.
Reacting to reports of cholera outbreaks in other states, Dr. Ayuk said, “It is not true that new cases of cholera were detected in the state. The last time there was a confirmed case was in January and that has been addressed.”
Despite the absence of new cases, the state is prepared for any emergencies. “The public health emergency response centre has been activated, while the local government response teams have all been strengthened with adequate capacity, including commodities to handle any emergency,” he said.
Dr. Ayuk advised citizens to maintain good personal hygiene, consume safe food and water, and avoid crowded places. He also urged residents to report any symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, or other cholera-related signs to the nearest health facility.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the health and well-being of its residents.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, about 40 people have died from cholera, and over 500 have been affected nationwide.
