Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed serious concern over his health condition while being held by the Department of State Services.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Nigerian Medical Association and dated September 29, 2025, Kanu claimed his health is “in danger,” citing what he described as negligent, inconsistent, and falsified medical care by the DSS.
According to the letter, Kanu alleged that his health has significantly deteriorated since his arrest and subsequent transfer from Kenya.
He accused the DSS of manipulating his medical records and failing to adhere to acceptable professional standards in his treatment.
“This letter is intended not only to bring my condition to the formal attention of the NMA but also to invoke the ethical responsibilities of the medical profession under both Nigerian law and international human rights standards,” he stated.
Kanu appealed to the NMA to urgently intervene in his case. He called for an independent investigation into the alleged falsification of his medical records, the protection of medical professionals involved in his case — particularly Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji — and the release of the NMA’s medical report dated September 22, 2025, which he noted had been ordered by the court to be filed within four days.
Highlighting the severity of his condition, Kanu warned that untreated health complications, including sleep deprivation caused by tinnitus, could pose a life-threatening risk. He urged the association to act promptly to prevent any further decline in his health.
Concerns about Kanu’s wellbeing in detention have been raised previously. In July, his legal team also accused the DSS of denying him access to adequate medical care.
